The animosity hanging between the Bears and running back Matt Forte increased to obviously dangerous levels Thursday when the team signed backup Michael Bush.
After news of Bush's four-year, $14 million contract with $7 million guaranteed with the Bears surfaced, Forte took to Twitter to vent. And he was joined by other players, too, online and in interviews.
Why's Forte angry? He is seeking a long-term contract with the Bears, but the team placed the franchise tag on him earlier this month, meaning he will earn $7.742 million this season.
Here's how the drama all played out.
MATT FORTE, @MattForte22
"There's only so many times a man that has done everything he's been asked to do can be disrespected! Guess the GOOD GUYS do finish last...."
"for the record I'm not mad at the signing of another running back. This is 4th time that's happened. I embrace competition as well as help"
"But as for not taking care of ur own and undervaluing a player under his market value is another story! #twitterrant"
"Just Keeping it real...hate it or love it."
TIM JENNINGS, @HennOrJenn26
"tell em why u mad son!!!!"
GREG OLSEN, @GregOlsen82
"If u have a studd 3 down guy like @MattForte22 why keep paying backups big $ every yr? Crazy!! Matt deserves better"
MICHAEL BUSH, in a conference call with reporters.
"I can understand where the guy is coming from. He's been everything they've asked for. As a player myself, I've been through an injury. We drafted Darren McFadden with the Raiders. It was one of those things you want to be rewarded for your success. I understand. It has nothing to do with me."
