NCAA tournament time? Pffft ...

March 08, 2012|By Bag Boy, For RedEye

Basketball dudes of the state of Illinois, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

You probably don't know this, but this is tournament season. You don't know it because nobody local has a chance of doing anything. Look around, if you can stand to.

Northwestern. Overachievers. Like the hustle. That's good for a half of good postseason ball (half of a game that is). Something to like: Their coach has been here 12 years. Twelve! I guess he's not going to the NBA! Something to hate: He's as good as it gets. Sorry, Cats fans. The team studies hard though.

Illinois. It's over for Bruce Weber, and Illinois should just be honest in pitching that job to the next guy. Hang a sign that says: "We know you want to end up at Kansas or the NBA but come here first!" Nothing here either.

Surprisingly, it gets worse. UIC. Already knocked out of their tourney by a school named Milwaukee.

DePaul. I'm forced to ask: Do the Blue Demons even still exist? Sadly, they do. Someone wake up Joey Meyer and see if he wants his job back. Seriously. 12-19 overall, one and done vs. Connecticut. Coach Oliver Purnell's career record at DePaul is unbearable.

This hurts a little more because the Bag remembers Mark Aguirre, Clyde Bradshaw, Dallas Comegys .... yeah, 1979. Final Four. Only 33 years ago.

Loyola. 7-23. (1-17 conference play). KO'd by a school named Detroit. (Who are these guys?)

Note: DePaul and Loyola are catholic schools. At what point do we ask the clergy to perform exorcisms?

This is Chicago, right? A veritable "hotbed" of high school basketball talent? You're telling me these schools can't find a couple of local studs and do some kind of damage?

Normally, when it gets this bad, it's time to "reach out" and make friends with schools Downstate. Not this time. Illinois State lost to Creighton--the trucking school?--so they're done. Doug Collins is ashamed of you.

And an old standby: Southern Illinois. Always tournament tough--not so this year. And not so since 2007. It's been a long time since that 1967 NIT championship, fellas.

I'm out of answers.
