Mini-review: Crumbs Bake Shop

We put our sweet tooth to the test at this pioneer cupcake shop

Crumbs Bake Shop
303 W Madison 312-263-6500
Rating: !! (out of 4) Give it some time

The scene: Another cupcake shop, we know ... but this one's got some history: Crumbs Bake Shop pretty much started the gourmet cupcake craze in New York City years ago, before the trend took hold here. Though you'll see the Crumbs sign above its front door on Madison Street just east of the river, you'll actually want to enter through the office building lobby to the left. Inside, you'll find a small space filled with countless cupcakes and smiley staffers.

The treats: Crumbs definitely impresses when it comes to the sheer variety of flavors, from classic red velvet to cookie dough to tiramisu to decadent candy-crusted creations. The standard cupcakes are big -- pictured an oversized muffin -- and best eaten with a knife and fork.

Bottom line: They were worth a try, but we can't say we like 'em better than downtown competitors Sprinkles (more manageable size) or Sugar Bliss (so delicious). We do like the fact that it's so easy to grab pre-packaged mini-cupcakes by the dozen on the way to work for a meeting co-worker's birthday, but wish they came with a flavor key to help us answer questions at the office.
