Boystown gears up for Madonna's halftime show

January 27, 2012|By Tony Peregrin, RedEye special contributor

Football and Madonna--the reigning pop star emeritus--are an unlikely pairing for some Super Bowl fans, but not for Omicah House, general manager of Halsted's, who is quick to point out (with a wink and a nudge) that Madge once rocked bedazzled shoulder pads at one of her concerts.

The NFL and NBC announced that Madonna would perform at Super Bowl XLVI's halftime show during the Detroit-New Orleans game Dec. 4, and quicker than a ray of light, Madonna-themed Super Bowl parties were planned for many of the bars in Boystown.

Nicki Minaj has dropped hints that she'll be performing with Madonna (cue video for "Stupid Hoe"), and online chatter has M.I.A. and Cee Lo also joining the Grammy Award-winning singer on football's biggest night.

Madonna's cryptic response to all the half time show rumors? "Pom poms. That's all I can tell you," said the pop icon to MTV News.

Like a prayer, she'll take you there with these Boystown Madonna-themed halftime parties in Boystown, Feb. 5.

Super Bowl Madonna Blowout!

Halsted's has their very own Madonna!  Kelly Lauren--former Miss Continental and one of the most popular Madonna impersonator's in Chicago--will strut the runway of the main aisle of the bar lip-synching to Madonna's greatest hits.

"Kelly Lauren will be your entertainment and hostess for the evening," said House, 26, "and she'll be dressed to impress even Madonna herself."

Watch the game--and the half time show--on one of Halsted's 12 HD TV's, in one of three seating areas.

Prior to kick off, the bar will unspool an hour of Madge's music videos via a video jukebox. (A fan favorite will be the video for Madonna's remake of "American Pie," which the Material Girl was to perform at the 2000 Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show in Atlanta before her appearance was nixed due to "schedule conflicts.")

For a $10 donation (benefiting the Edge Alliance, a foundation for people living with HIV/AIDS)  patrons have access to the halftime buffet and will be entered into a raffle to win two roundtrip airfare tickets to anywhere in the U.S.

"The great thing about Halsted's is that we will have it all on Super Bowl Sunday," adds House. "The cheering, shouting, and grunts of watching the Giants take on the Patriots and the screams, applauds and gasps for  Madonna (and Kelly Lauren)!"

Madonna-rama Halftime Party

This all-day Madonna fete jumps off at brunch (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and keeps causing a commotion until the wee hours of the morn. Diva Madame X vogues her way through brunch, while Diva Kinley Preston does her best Blonde Ambition during the game.

Football fans can take in the action on seven state-of-the-art screens, while sipping half-price martinis (over 100 on the drink list). The specialty cocktail for Super Bowl Sunday is, of course, the M.D.N.A. Martini (Effen Cucumber, Hpnotiq, Harmonie, St. Germain with a splash of sprite).

The Madonnarama Super Bowl Half Time Show After Party

Madonnarama is the first Sunday of every month, and the February party just happens to coincide with her Madgesty's highly anticipated performance on Super Bowl Sunday. Expect rare mixes and video footage courtesy of DJ/VJ Riley York at this popular Boystown event, now in its seventh year, and bartenders decked out in football jerseys decorated in what bar owner Jo Webster calls "true Madge style."

"Berlin was founded in the mid-Eighties as a music video bar for a mixed crowd and so we were identified with Madonna's style and message right from the start," says Webster. "In many ways this is the logical heart of her popularity in Boystown, and when I named this one night a month to honor her, it just seemed to fit--and Madonnarama was born!"

The doors open at 10 p.m. at this afterparty, which according to Webster, "gives people a chance to get into a change of clothes before they go dancing."

"Roscoe's will be airing the half time show, of course," said Shawn Hazen, promotions coordinator. Look for "official" Madonna halftime show footballs with the name and release date of Madonna's new album. (Note: If you want to hear the game, you might want to head elsewhere as the game will not be shown with sound.)
