Do you withstand the wind, snow and bitter cold temps and ride your bike in the winter?

Bundled bike commuters can stop by Daley Plaza on Friday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. to warm up with a free cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate from Caribou Coffee to celebrate Winter Bike to Work Day.

The Active Transportation Alliance organized the event to commemorate the coldest day in city history when it was 27 degrees below zero on Jan. 20, 1985 at O'Hare, according to the alliance news release.

The first 50 cyclists at the event can get a free rear bike light or ski mask to stay warm. Bike commuters also can get free bike safety checks and enter to win a folding bike.

Friday marks the start of registration for the MB Financial Bank Bike the Drive, an event on May 27 when Lake Shore Drive is closed to traffic and open only for cyclists. From Friday to Feb. 5, event registration (bikethedrive.org costs $35 for an adult who is not a member of the Active Transportation Alliance and members get $5 knocked off.. After that, the fee increases.
