Food fight: Would you buy sushi from Walgreens?

January 10, 2012|By RedEye staff

This week, Walgreens opened a fancy new State Street flagship store with new features such as a wine section and a (drum roll, please) ... sushi bar. The question is, would you eat it?

I’m totally gonna get banned from my favorite sushi place for this. But at least you can watch the Walgreens sushi wizards making your maki before your very eyes, and eat it straight off the knife. This isn’t any worse than the stuff you can buy at Jewel—and might be smarter than delivery rolls of questionable origin. Of course, when it comes to drugstore gourmet, you probably should head for pizza rolls anyway. --Dana Moran

If you're considering eating Walgreens sushi to save a buck or two, let me stop you right there. It's not worth it. A few months ago, I tried the “sushi” at a Lakeview location. At $4, it was the most expensive sawdust I've ever had. This was no California lovin'. I think the only reason I'd go to the new Walgreens sushi bar is to see what they actually put into the roll. But I'll be saving my money, and my stomach, thank you. --Tracy Swartz
