Vote: Are scoreboard proposals romantic or cheesy?

December 21, 2011

According to wedding planning site, 31 percent of proposals take place between December and February. And with hockey, football and basketball season in full swing, you know what that means: Scoreboard proposals. So, are these gestures of affection utterly romantic or just plain cheesy?

A scoreboard proposal may not be the most original, but when it comes to admirable qualities in your mate for life, does originality even make it into the top five? It takes more effort and planning to have "Will you marry me" spelled out in lights than just getting down on one knee at a fancy restaurant or plunking the ring in the bottom of a champagne glass, and if your fianceé-to-be is a sports fan, then what could be more appropriate? Besides, true love can never be considered overplayed. Say it with me now: Awww.

My sincere congratulations to anyone preparing to pop the question. That said: Why involve tens of thousands of strangers in a priceless moment between you and the person you love? The text appears on the screen for a few seconds and then it's replaced by someone else who has the same idea, which doesn't make you look so original. Personalize, don't replicate.
