Hipster alderman wants to buy you a beer (or soda)

Chicago's hipster alderman is doing something effortlessly cool again—by buying a round of beer for Wicker Park and Bucktown residents.

Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno (1st) is hosting his monthly constituent meet-and-greet from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday at sports spot Boundary Tavern and Grille, 1932 W. Division St. Moreno, who has been alderman since March 2010, said he's been hosting these get-togethers since May of last year.

"They've been very successful," said Moreno, who has been dubbed the "hipster alderman" because of his love of indie music and bikes.

Moreno said he typically rotates the location of the gatherings. They've previously been held at Ukrainian Village beer garden Happy Village and Wicker Park tequila joint Salud. The bar is open to other patrons, Moreno said.

Moreno said the event is not a fundraiser and he pays for the first round (beer or soda) out of his own pocket. He said he's expecting about 100 people at Thursday's shindig.

Residents, who typically range from 20- to 50-somethings, are welcome to talk to him about any topic including bingo, which he plays at senior centers.

"It's really laid back and fun," Moreno said.
