Bag Boy: La Russa rerun could have happy ending

November 03, 2011|By Bag Boy | For RedEye

It's time for a special episode of "Chicago Story."

Warning: it's a rerun.

Someone is clearly on his way to greatness here, has a falling out, goes and achieves greatness somewhere else and returns here for the twilight years. Think Greg Maddux.

Can't help but think of that one as Jerry Reinsdorf is wooing Tony La Russa. "Should never have fired him." "Worst mistake ever." "I wanted to make sure he landed on his feet."

I'll recap: Sox can La Russa, he goes on to win multiple titles with the A's and Cardinals. He retired after winning this year's World Series as the third most successful manager in the game.

Now he's open to taking a job, say, with the White Sox. Thanks. He's 67. Glad we get the glory years!

I say hire him anyway and run Kenny "Nobody's Favorite Alpha" Williams out of dodge. I'll bet La Russa is 10 times as smart even at this age. I'll take him.

So remember that, Theo Epstein, as you just turned down Ryne Sandberg. I hear he's talking to the Cardinals.

Nightmare: Ryno goes to the Cards for the next 20 years and tortures the Cubs. It writes itself.

So we'll get Terry Francona (medication free, I hope) and make do.

Note to Epstein: Nice move on ending the Mike Quade regime quickly. Love the efficiency. Love the new management team. Awfully young. Saw them skateboarding outside Wrigley. Kidding.

The "run him off for his prime" theory holds true for football. It was done to Chris Harris, and I say it happens to Matt Forte. I say the Bears don't pay him, he goes on to dominate and we get him back for his 37th B-Day. Yay!

Speaking of, Bears at Eagles. The road to 10-6 begins in Philly. Could be a win, but it is a Monday night. I may skip it.

Instead, we say congratulations to the Northern Illinois University Huskies. Your MAC West leaders with a 63-60 win over Toledo. Jerry Angelo, get that O-coordinator on speed dial.
